To be or not to be ...

hello ppl ... feels good to be back ...

the all important question in the minds of all responsible kgpians is whether we will be able to have illumination this year or not ...

let me bring you up to speed ... the fact that diwali is on 12th of Nov and only 6 days before the end-sems is the issue here ...

its a plain fact that having illu at that time is atrocious on the students as a lot of effort goes into the preparation for the event ... however the profs will not budge ... they want to have it on the date of diwali in order to preserve "tradition " ... the simple fact that no hall can possibly risk investing thousands into illu when they cannot be sure of inspiring all the inmates of the hall to work ... and in which case the very event becomes uncertain ... cannot be understood by the profs ... they would rather not have illu than have it on another day ...

the event that is unique to IIT Kharagpur being obliterated due to the obstinacy of some of the figureheads of the student-body they proudly call Technology Students' Gymkhana .... It might as well be called the Technology Professors' Gymkhana for all we care ... as the reluctance to make any allowance to the student community becomes increasingly evident ...

in times such as these one comes to realise the futility of having a student body with elected office-bearers ... when they ultimately become no more than pawns in the hands of the profs ...

the axe hanging at the head of the showpiece event of the campus is for all to see ...

we can only hope that it does not fall ...

Isnt the chaos resolved.... There was a rumour that it has finally been shifted to the 5th of november (after the saturdays meeting)...... anyways Illu must happen whether the profs agree or not, what is the need for their permission if the g'secs of all the halls agree to have a 'unofficial' illu on the 5th (either ways no one cares for the maintenance gc) ....chal happy mugging....best of luck for the midsems

Having proverbial figureheads ordering people around is a problem the world over... and these things go to prove that even at IIT Kgp, which is supposedly an island when it comes to the outer world, is on the world map...

as for illu, we do really feel that having illu just 6 days before the end term examinations is atrocious for the students. no hall can expect very good participation from their freshers in that case... and if there is no work done.. having illu is a complete waste...

tradition is important... but over time, things tend to become so rigid that people forget to look at the practicality of the situation... they blindly follow their seniors, their forefather, their teachers without ever giving a thought to how things can be improved, how they can resolve problems... everybody wants to leave the status quo...

this is not so much a problem with one calendar year, rather an attitudional one... and really needs to be looked at

We live in a world gaurded by a set of rules made by the very people who break them, for their own purposes. Those who talk so highly about tradition will not hesitate to shirk away if the same tradition comes in their personal interests . Unfortunately we can do nothing about it .

hi juice...the only reason that the profs want illu on diwali is tht they have completely forgottwn how diwali is celebrated...all they remember abt diwali is tht they have to go arnd watching beautiful displays in the various halls for which they have done absolutely NOTHING...if illu isnt held on diwali what will they do?...vexing isn't it?
